With her parents and coach watching, West Point High senior Synethia Mathews became the school's first female golfer to sign a college scholarship Wednesday when she signed to play golf at the University of West Alabama in Livingston, Ala.

Mathews took up the game less than four years ago when a coach asked her to come shadow a golfer.

She got hooked and this year "really became more concerned" about her game, according to her coach, former MSU golfer Perry Catherine Furr.

Mathews will study chemistry at UWA. Pictured at Wednesday's signing, which was done in front of dozens of family and classmates, are, from left, Furr, Mathews' father, Stan Mathews, the golfer, and her mother, Cynthia Mathews.
