West Point head football coach Chris Chambless knew what he had to do when his team faced a halftime deficit on Friday night.

When the Green Wave fell behind the Olive Branch Conquistadors 21-14 at the intermission in a road Class 5A, Region 1 outing, Chambless turned to his seniors for help.

“I had a meeting with the seniors at halftime and told them that this is how it is,” Chambless said. “If you want to win, you’ve got to fight and keep everybody up. We had great leadership in the second half.”

West Point finished the game strong with two fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns and edged Olive Branch 34-33.

After Brandon Harris broke a 10-yard touchdown run to get the Green Wave within 33-28, Dantariyus Cannon scored on a 12-yard play to give them the one-point win.

Chambless didn’t expect anything less than the back and forth outing that West Point got.

“I know I was the only one that played up here in 2004 with a bunch and it was the same thing - a dogfight,” Chambless said. “You are not going to get all of the calls you need and things are going to go against us, but you’ve got to play the next play and can’t quit. That’s exactly what we did. I’m proud of our guys for overcoming adversity.”

The Conquistadors struck first in the game when Cole Catledge found Josh Stevenson with a 17-yard pass, but the Green Wave bounced right back with Harris’ first of three touchdowns on a 1-yard run.

In the second quarter, Olive Branch scored a pair of touchdowns with a 1-yard run by Preston Jeffries and a 5-yard pass from Catledge to Johnny Setchfield.

Harris had a 6-yard touchdown run to keep West Point within striking distance at halftime.

The two teams traded short running scores in the third quarter as Gary Banks II ran one in from 2 yards out for the Conquistadors and Jaylun Eggerson did the honors for the Green Wave of 1 yard.

Banks had a 25-yard run for points to open the fourth quarter to give Olive Branch its 33-21 lead, but it was not enough as Harris and Cannon completed the West Point rally.

Harris finished with 99 yards on 14 carries for the Green Wave, while Kameron Martin added 82 yards on eight attempts and Cannon chipped in 65 yards on eight carries.

West Point quarterback Jake Chambless completed 5-of-8 pass attempts for 98 yards. Cannon had a pair of receptions for 62 yards.

The Green Wave (7-1 overall, 4-0 Class 5A, Region 1) travel to Grenada next week.
