The West Point Green Wave has a rich history in Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA). The storied program continues its run toward its eighth state championship this Friday night.
West Point (10-2) squares off against the Grenada Chargers (10-2) in the MHSAA Class-5A quarterfinals at 7 at Grenada High School. Last season, the Wave reached this round but fell to the Oxford Chargers 42-14 in West Point.
The Wave defeated the Ridgeland Titans 46-7 last Friday to advance deeper into the postseason. It’s the second consecutive appearance in the second round, and West Point is playing for its first North State Championship berth since 2012.
West Point and Grenada are familiar opponents. The Wave tilted against Grenada in a non-district game last season, winning the game 21-16 at McCallister Field. In playoff action, West Point dispatched Grenada 10-3 in the 2002 Class-4A North State Championship at Grenada High School. The Wave lost the Class-4A crown to the D’Iberville Warriors that season.
The Chargers, who played its first home playoff game since 2002, defeated the Clarksdale Wildcats 31-6. Grenada, under the direction of former West Point offensive coordinator Ashley Kuhn, won nine games in the regular season and claimed the Region 2-5A championship with a perfect 7-0 record.
The winner of West Point-Grenada plays the winner of Oxford-Germantown on Friday, Nov. 27.
