Football is back for the defending Class 5A State champions tonight.

Although it will come in the form of a jamboree, the West Point Green Wave will surge on to McAllister Field as they play North Panola at 7 p.m.

West Point head coach Chris Chambless said it helps to scrimmage another team, as it will be lining up against competition for the first time since the end of last season.

“These kids are tired of beating on each other every day,” Chambless said. “There is a lot of serious competition amongst us, but at the end of the day, our defense especially likes to stand on the other side of the line and play somebody else.”

North Panola went 12-2 last year and didn’t lose a single game in league play as they finished with a 5-0 record in Class 3A, Region 2.

The Green Wave earned their third-straight Class 5A State title and a 14-1 record, going 7-0 in Class 5A, Region 1 last year, but Chambless is now looking to younger players to step up and continue the success of the program.

With each new season comes the challenge of losing veteran players, but games like the jamboree allows for players to gain in game experience before the season starts.

“We are going to try and get as many guys as we can on film, so we can critique them and get them better,” Chambless said.
