West Point Ends Losing Streak: Knocks Off Oxford 22-8

Oxford scored on their first possession of the game to take an 8-7 lead on West Point. The Chargers wouldn’t see the end zone again as West Point ended their five game losing streak to Oxford.
Oxford would start the scoring in the contest, as the Chargers took possession of the ball after West Point was unable to get anything going on their first offensive possession. Oxford picked senior quarterback Clayton Knight off at the Charger 47-yard line.
The Chargers went drove the ball 57 yards, and Hiram Wadlington punched the ball in on a third and goal from the one-yard line to give Oxford a 6-0 lead. The Chargers went for two and sophomore quarterback John Reece Mcclure ran the ball in to give Oxford a 8-0 lead early in the first quarter.
West Point would immediately respond to the Charger touchdown, as West Point took possession on their own 33-yard line after the kickoff. Junior running back Marcus Murphy would go 67 yards on the next play to cut the lead to 8-6. Jose Garcia knocked home the extra point and the Chargers would lead 8-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Neither team was able to put anything together offensively in the second half until West Point’s final possession where the Green Wave were able to drive into Charger territory and close to field goal range.
The Green Wave dropped a pass that would have put them in Garcia’s range with five seconds left in the first half, and Clayton Knight’s toss toward the end zone fell incomplete to end the first half, as Oxford took a 8-7 lead to the locker room.
Marcus Murphy finished the first half with 12 carries for 96 yards, and senior quarterback Clayton Knight went 4-9 for 30 yards and an interception in the first half.
West Point was unable to get anything going on their first offensive series of the second half, but the West Point put the Green Wave in a position to take the lead when the Green Wave stripped Mcclure and fell on the football at the Oxford 41-yard line.
Three plays later Murphy would take the ball 39 yards to the end zone to give West Point a 14-7 lead. Garcia would add the point after attempt to give the Green Wave a 15-7 lead.
Oxford took the ball and drove down the field into Green Wave territory with a chance to tie the game. After a hard three yard run by Hiram Wadlington on 4th and 1, the Chargers had a first and ten at the Green Wave 40. Oxford fumbled the ball, and C.J. Melton picked it up and took it to the house to give West Point a 22-8 lead.
Murphy finished the night with 18 carries for 178 and two touchdowns. Clayton Knight finished with ()

West Point will travel to Clarksdale next week. The Wildcats knocked off New Hope on Friday night.
