Wave tennis loses tough match to Saltillo

West Point High’s tennis team fell 7-0 to visiting district foe Saltillo Tuesday evening but even in the loss, the team showed some promise.

The Wave’s Emma Berry lost a tooth 6-3, 7-5 decision to the Tigers’ Autumn McHenry at girls single.

“This was Emma’s best match of the year so far. I am so proud of her,” Coach Tiara Brown said of her young player.

At boys doubles, it appeared brothers Thomas and Dominic Borgioli would cruise to a win after they took the opening set 6-1 from Logan Irwin and Cade Teeple. But the Saltillo duo fought back, taking the second set 7-5 and then winning the third in a 10-6 tiebreaker.

In mixed doubles, J. B. Harrell and Aerial Johnson also lost a tough match, falling 6-3, 7-5 to Eli Hannon and Lara Grace Fair.

Cole Ross fell to Saltillo’s Houston Walker at boys singles, Kailey Moore and Lilli Baird lost to Erin Ford and Lexi Loden and girls doubles and Kennedy Lairy and Lindsey Hill fell to Jenna VanValkenburg and Elizabeth Wright at second girls doubles.
