Progress isn’t always obvious. And West Point High’s boys soccer loss Tuesday night to defending state 5A champion and district foe Saltillo may be one of those examples.

The Green Wave lost 7-0 but did it with only 11 players and were even more short-handed when two of those were injured.

“Even the Saltillo coach said we were much better than we’ve been in the past,” Wave coach Steve Cannon said. “Our guys gave it their all, they just love the game that much. Even when they got hurt, they wanted to stay in.”

Antonio Facella had the Wave’s closest scoring opportunities, just missing on two “really good shots,” Cannon said.

J.D. Tummy also drew praise for his defensive play.

“he was unbelievable. On one play, the goalie came out to try to cut off an attacker and Tummy stepped in behind him and went to his knees to block a shot off his chest,” Cannon noted.

The Wave boys and girls teams are on the road Friday at district-foe Grenada.
