A proposed rezoning could clear the way for a storage unit complex in West Point.

Property owner Ralph Nichols is asking the West Point Planning Commission to rezone about a tract on the west side of Highway 45 Alternate on the north side of A Touch of Home restaurant from R-1-S — residential small lots — to C-3 commercial.

The front part of the lot along Highway 45 Alternate already is zoned commercial but the back portion — about a half acre — is zoned residential. It sits at the end of Barksdale Drive which is a residential street. The western part of the property to be rezoned is adjacent to two houses.

The homes along the east side of Barksdale back up to commercial properties.

Nichols has told city leaders the potential buyer for the property is interested in building storage units. Another storage unit complex already is located just a few lots further south on the same side of Highway 45 Alternate.

The Planning Commission meets at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 6 in City Hall. The Board of Selectmen will consider the Planning Commission’s recommendation at its Nov. 13 meeting.
