Starkville, Mississippi native, Laurie Parker brought not only her books to Luncheon With Books at the Bryan Public Library, but her hand - made jewelry and Christmas ornaments. Parker is more than a writer, she is an extremely talented artist, as well. She has illustrated all of her own children’s books and her novels.
“Laurie has been coming to visit with us for eight or nine years,” Lucille Armstrong, president of Friends of the Library, said. “After her first book, we were the first venue that hosted her and her book. We hope to continue welcoming her for many more years to come.”
Parker hopes to write and release as many novels as children’s books. While her children’s books were handled by a publisher, Parker self – publishes her novels.
“There is a stigma attached to self – publishing,” Parker said. “And since anyone can ‘publish’ a book on Amazon, it does cheapen it. But I truly publish my books in hard - back novel length. It is expensive, but I love doing it. I ride around with a box full of books in my trunk all the time. A lot of people say John Grisham got his start that way, I’m still waiting to make it big.”
