As the community officially kicks off the holiday season with the annual tree-lighting and Christmas parade Monday evening, West Point and Clay County residents should remember altered traffic patterns in parts of downtown leading up to the start of the parade.
Groups taking part in the parade will be entering Westbrook Street and South Commerce in the area of the West Point Post office and library starting at 5 p.m. Monday.

That means access to South Commerce below Tournament Street will be limited. Likewise, Westbrook will be closed between Court Street and McClellan Street as parade participants line up along the street and in the post office, library and police department parking lots, according to Lisa Klutts, the director of the West Point Clay County Growth Alliance, which organizes the parade.

Drivers dropping people off for the parade, people who need to get through the area and residents all should be aware of the closures and delays and make alternate plans.

People planning to attend the lighting of the city Christmas Tree in Sally Kate Winters Park near the intersection of Commerce and Broad streets are encouraged to park in areas behind city hall or the downtown churches and walk to the tree-lighting, which starts at 6 p.m. and then stay to enjoy the parade.

The parade starts at 6:30 p.m. and goes north on Commerce for three blocks to Main Street and turns west on Main, going nine blocks, ending at the Sav-A-Lot parking lot.
