Oak Hill to scrimmage Pickens Academy as part of ‘Meet Raiders’

It will be a chance for the Oak Hill Academy Raiders to see how far they’ve come in the preseason.

When the Raiders scrimmage against the Pickens Academy Raiders at home on Friday night, it will be like looking in a mirror.

The Raiders and Pirates have created a preseason tradition of going against each other over the last eight years.

Oak Hill Academy coach Chris Craven said the two programs are very similar and is usually a good measuring stick each year.

“It’s a good team for us to get a standard for where we are because their numbers are about the same and their players are about the same,” Craven said. “They are normally a tough-nosed ball club and play some good football at Pickens.”

Craven has watched some younger Raiders come into the mix and has spent the last few weeks in practice getting them ready for the season.

He sees the scrimmage against Pickens Academy as another step in that process.

“The biggest thing is to get them coached up so they can help the team,” Craven said. “Outside of that, we’re just going to be us, do what we do and run our regular offense and regular defense. There has been a little bit of a learning curve so we’re excited to see where we are this Friday night on those things.

“We’re going to keep it simple and not going to be hard, but at the same time, we’ve got to press the envelope a little bit to see what these new guys know and what they don’t know.”

Friday will present a full night of activities on the Oak Hill campus.

Meet the Raiders will begin at 6:45 p.m. when the varsity football team and cheerleaders will be introduced. The state champion golf team and mixed doubles tennis champions will take a bow at 6:55 p.m.

The varsity scrimmage against Pickens Academy will start at 7 p.m.

“It’s going to be a test, but we’ll see what we’ve got,” Oak Hill linebacker Jaden Craven said. “We’re big, we’re physical, we’re strong and we like to hit people. I think that’s going to show up on that field Friday night.”

During halftime, the junior varsity football, junior varsity cheerleaders, pee wee football members, pee wee cheerleaders and softball team will be introduced.

Fish plates will also be available for $10 each beginning at 5 p.m.
