The National West Point Alumni, Inc., holds it largest fundraiser of the year in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The NWPA awards scholarships to help West Point High School graduating seniors with college tuition. The Twenty Third Annual MLK Black Tie Banquet, was cancelled this year due to COVID-19.
"All of us in the NWPA, Inc., were disappointed to announce the cancellation," Bettye Swift, Chapter President, said. "This is a major fundraiser for our scholarships that we award every year. It was a hard decision to make, but we do not want to be responsible for anyone becoming ill."
Normally the event would have taken place at the Community Counseling Services Gymnasium at the former Mary Holmes College, Friday, Jan. 15.
"We would have been finalizing plans and looking at last minute details this week," Swift said. "I always love watching everything fall into place. This is our event for the MLK weekend festivities. I'm just heartbroken."
