Looking around the district: Oak Hill football

Oak Hill season got started on Friday night, but they weren’t able to finish their contest with Deer Creek Academy because of lightning. Oak Hill was leading 3-0 when the game was called.

The Raiders will play their home opener on Friday night as Newton Academy will head to West Point for a non-district matchup.

Oak Hill’s district has some new faces this year with Marshall Academy and Central Holmes Christian joining them, Winona Christian and Carrol Academy from last year.

Last Week: The Stars had a solid offensive showing on Friday night, but they struggled to get off the field consistently against French Camp, falling to the Panthers 38-36 in a game that went right down to the wire.

What’s Next: Winona Christian will continue their run through MHSAA 1A schools as they’ll take on Ethel next week at home. Ethel fell to McAdams 48-0 over the weekend. The Stars first district game of the season will come that next week as they’ll play Central Holmes Christian.

Last Week: The Patriots had a rough go of it on Friday night, falling 22-7 to Lee Academy out of Clarksdale. Lee is one of the better MAIS teams in the state, and has been known for having a stingy defense. The Patriots were inconsistent on third-downs, and the defense eventually broke down leading them to start the season 0-1.

This Week: Marshall will play a more familiar opponent this week, as they’ll take on West Memphis Christian Academy on Friday night. West Memphis has gotten better and better over the years, and will provide a challenge for Marshall. The Patriots first district game of the year will come in week four as they’ll take on Central Homes Christian Academy.

Last Week: Carrol was able to get off to the right foot last week with a 34-7 win over Desoto School. The Rebels didn’t start their season last week and will get the 2017 campaign started on Friday night. Carrol was one of the better defensive teams in Oak Hill’s district last season, and will likely field another solid defense. The Rebels return a lot of their production on the offensive side of the football as well.

What’s Next: The Rebels will play Lee Academy next week in a non-district matchup, before playing Newton the next week. Carrol’s first district game will be against Oak Hill in the fifth week of the season.

Last Week: Central Holmes had the most impressive victory in the district last week, as they were able to pound Strider Academy 38-0 in a game that was never competitive. What’s Next: The Trojans will take on Deer Creek Academy next week, before jumping into district play in the third week of the season against Winona Christian
