A memorial service for the West Point mother and daughter who perished in an apartment fire last week is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Town Creek Missionary Baptist Church on Barton Ferry Road.
Rev. Robert Shamblin will officiate the memorial for 24-year-old Shayla Swain and 15-month-old Serenity Cox.
Donations should be made to Carter Mortuary's Service, P. O. Box 773, West Point, MS. 39773.

Donations will be used to cover the funeral expenses.

Any left over funds will be used to establish a trust fund for the surviving daughter, 2-year-old Trinity Cox.

Donations can be mailed or dropped off at the funeral home.
The bodies of the mother and child were found upstairs in their apartment at 23 Layne Drive #32 after West Point firefighters extinguished the early morning blaze Aug. 1.

Investigators think an overloaded extension cord shorted out and sparked the fire.

Shayla originally escaped the apartment with Trinity and handed it off to the father, 23-year-old Stefon Cox, before dashing back inside and upstairs to try to save Serenity, who'd only recently returned home after undergoing surgery at LeBonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis.

The child was found in her crib and the mother next to it.
