The West Point community is rallying to help one of its young athletes whose mother died unexpectedly Monday night.
Demetrick Murphy was the mother of former West Point High football star and Mississippi State freshman Marcus Murphy. She apparently suffered a heart attack.
In addition to Marcus, who is 20, she leaves behind a daughter, Zarcayla.
Marcus led the Green Wave to state Class 5A state football titles as a junior and senior in 2016 and 2017 and just completed his freshman year at Mississippi State, where he played mostly on special teams during his first year.
He also has a young child.
West Point parent Brandi Morgan started a GoFundMe page with a goal of $25,000 to help with funeral expenses and to keep Marcus and his sister on their feet until they can can cope with the tragedy.
“There have been countless times he has put up with my kids hanging all over him and he’s always done it with a smile. He is a great friend, dad and son. We’ve watched him grow into a successful athlete and man,” Morgan wrote on the GoFundMe introduction.
“He is now a son having to endure pains that no young 20-year-old should have to face,” Morgan continued, urging community support for the family and the fund raising campaign.
