Columbus teen killed in Clay County wreck

MHP Troop G Public Information Officer Sgt. Derrick Bowman said the wreck occurred near Pate Road in Clay County about 5:29 p.m. when a 2007 white Dodge Nitro driven by 66-year-old Robert Fisher Jr of West Point was traveling west when he collided with a gray 2005 Nissan 350Z traveling east driven by 16-year-old Jonathan Dean Fondren of Columbus.

Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal two-vehicle wreck that left a Columbus teenager dead and a West Point man injured Tuesday night on the Clay County side of Highway 50 heading into Lowndes County.

MHP Troop G Public Information Officer Sgt. Derrick Beckom said the wreck occurred near Pate Road in Clay County about 5:29 p.m. when a 2007 white Dodge Nitro driven by 66-year-old Robert Fisher Jr of West Point was traveling west before he collided in the eastbound lane with a gray 2005 Nissan 350Z driven by 16-year-old Jonathan Dean Fondren of Columbus.

Bowman said Fondren was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fisher was transported by ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus to be treated for his injuries.

There were no other occupants in either vehicle involved.

The wreck remains under investigation by MHP.
