A 26-year-old Clay County man is given a 10-year suspended sentence, a year in the Lowndes County Jail and five years probation for attempting to strangle his former girlfriend during a domestic assault last summer.

Isaiah Lamar Terry, who lists his parents’ address on Highway 47 in western Clay County as his residence, pleaded guilty to aggravated domestic assault in Lowndes County Circuit Court. He started serving his sentence Friday.

The charge stemmed from an incident June 22, 2018, at an apartment on Hospital Drive in Columbus he shared with his then-girlfriend, according to court documents. He was on top of her strangling the woman, leaving marks on her neck and her body, the indictment said.

Terry has no prior record, according to court records. He does have three children, ages 4, 2, and six months.

In a victim impact statement filed with the courts in January, the woman said she still has scars from the assault, is “scared to talk to anyone about” the incident, and is “still paying bills because of him.”
