Big early inning does in Raiders

DTL Staff Report

Oak Hill Academy gave up six first-inning runs and could never recover Wednesday in a 12-2 high school baseball loss at Bruce.

The Trojans jumped on two Oak Hill pitchers in the first inning and a third before Ash Cullum came on and quieted things but by then, the Raiders were down 9-2 after two innings. Bruce then put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Oak Hill’s pitching staff didn’t help itself, issuing eight walks while allowing eight hits and striking out three. The Raiders made just one error.

Bruce’s first-inning rally included four straight singles and a hit batsman before the Raiders turned a double play when Logan Stewart hit a ground ball to shortstop Jonah Caskey. But another hit batsman, two singles and two more walks gave the Trojans a big lead.

Oak Hill fought back when Ethan Bryan and Cameron Dill each drew walks to open the top of the second. With one out, Robert Thompson singled to center to score Bryan. Parker Thompson walked to load the bases and Alex Powell singled to right to score Dill.

But a fly out and ground ball ended the rally and for the most part, the Raiders’ hopes.

Bryan collected two of Oak Hill’s five hits while Robert Thompson, Powell and Dill had one each. Dill’s was a double.

Both teams left eight runners on base.
