The Oak Hill Academy Raiders tennis doubles partners John Ross Craven, a seventh grader, and sixth grader Jack Ketchum gave a full effort at the State tournament in Ridgeland on Wednesday, but came up short to Newton County Academy.

The Raiders lost the first set 6-2, before falling in a 7-6 tiebreaker set, despite grabbing a 6-5 lead.

“We didn’t play good as we did last week,” Oak Hill coach Junior Ray said, referring to the duo qualifying at the North State tournament. “We missed several easy shots but that’s part of tennis.”

Ray then praised his squad, saying despite their youth, he was proud of the performance throughout the year.

“(Newton County Academy) will have to play the team that put us out last week (Manchester Academy),” Ray said. “Had we played like we played last week, we would have beat them.”

The Oak Hill Academy tennis team won its district championship this season after finishing undefeated in district play.
