No. 5 – Hebron Christian vs. Delta Academy

Daily Times Leader starts its Top 5 countdown of the Hebron Christian Eagles' 2014 football season. The Eagles had a 6-4 overall record, including a 3-1 record in the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools' (MAIS) District 7-A. Hebron made the 2014 playoffs before bowing out to eventual MAIS 8-man champion Sharkey-Issaquena Academy in the opening round of the postseason. This season, David Foster returns for his fourth football season as Hebron's head coach, boasting a 21-10 personal record. Foster and the Eagles open their regular season against Sharkey-Issaquena on Friday, Aug. 21 at HCS in Pheba.

THE FACTS: Hebron Christian's defense forced three turnovers and used Landon Hill’s big individual night to down Delta Academy 38-14 in a non-district 8-man game Friday, Sept. 26 at Hebron Christian School in Pheba.
Hebron had its 22-6 halftime advantage cut in half when Delta's Chandler Williams connected with John Webb for a 14-yard touchdown pass, and the Raiders converted the ensuing two-point conversion. The Eagles, however, answered as Hill added his third touchdown carry, and Collin Moore crossed the goal line on a 36-yard scamper.

THE STATS: (Landon) Hill, a rising senior, accounted for 207 total yards and three Eagle touchdowns. The junior rushed six times for 137 yards and three touchdowns of 59, 45 and three yards. He made seven catches for 53 yards. Hill had a team-high 21 tackles on defense.
Returning starting quarterback Channing Tapley completed 15 of 22 pass attempts for 138 yards and one touchdown. The rising senior passed five times to graduate Collin Moore for 33 yards and a touchdown. Payton Griffin got in on the aerial attack as well as the rising senior tight end collected three catches for 53 yards.
The Eagles had six players with more than 10 tackles against the Raiders. Rising senior Brian Eaddy caused a fumble and recovered it, rising senior Jessie Moore recovered a fumble. Collin Moore had an interception.

WHAT THEY SAID: “A pretty good effort on all our parts against Delta,” Hebron Head Coach David Foster said. “Defensively, we did well not giving them the edge, and we caused some turnovers.
“We had success as an offense, but the success started at the offensive line,” Foster added. “Emerson Shinn, Josiah Parrish and Jessie Moore did a great job blocking, allowing us time to pass and run the ball.”

THE NEXT MEETING: Hebron and Delta match up this season in non-district action. The Eagles and the Raiders square off on Friday, Sept. 18 in Marks.
