Melton takes two firsts at track meet

West Point High’s boys track team brought home several honors from Saturday’s 49 th annual Daily Journal Relays that drew more than 20 teams from Mississippi and Tennessee to Tupelo High.

Senior Ryan Melton had a near-career day.

Melton, who has signed a football scholarship with the University of South Alabama, won his heat and went on the finish fifth overall in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.65. He took first in the long jump with a leap of 21.4 feet and first in the triple jump at 42.9 feet.

Marquees Gardner took third in the 300-meter hurdles and fifth in the 100 hurdles.

Kobe Pate was seventh in the high jump and the team of Jimothy Mays, Jykeon Cunningham, Jaqwan Young and Pate took seventh in the 4x200-meter relay.

Jay Quinn, Brentt Cunningham, Fred McMillian and Melton took seventh in the 4x100 relay.

Jaquaris Thomas, Bryson Thomas, Jakwon Bradshaw and Jamar Davis took second in the 4x100 meter heavyweight relay for shot putters and discus throwers. The quartet had a time of 53.4 seconds.

On the girls side, India Beene, Shamonica Cathchings, Michala Gillespie and Tina Haughton took fifth in the 4x400m relay

Jediah Gaines took second in the shot put with a throw of 27.7 feet and Kenya Conley took seventh with a toss of 25.7 Conley also was fifth in the discuss with a throw of 72.9.

Kyla Walker was ninth in the 300 hurdles and the team of Jakeria Woods, Kiara Weatherspoon, Essence Tillman and Aniya Sykes finished seventh in the 4x100 relay.

Weatherspoon also finished eighth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.77
