Junior Auxiliary of West Point is providing school supplies through “Stuff the Bus” and school uniforms to students in need in West Point and Clay County.

Public Relations Chair Meagan Young said Junior Auxiliary held their annual Stuff the Bus school supplies drive last Friday afternoon and Saturday morning at Wal-Mart.

“It went extremely well this year,” Young said.

Junior Auxiliary President Laura Stewart said the supplies were given to West Point Consolidated School District schools, Oak Hill Academy and Hebron Christian Schools, and the teachers distributed the supplies as needed to kindergarteners through high school students.

“We were able to give a sizable box of donations to each school,” Stewart said. “We were able to collect a lot of school supplies this year. The community really showed up for this project.”

Young said Junior Auxiliary also provides school uniforms to students in need.

“If a child’s house burns down or they really just can’t afford uniforms and they come to school with uniforms with holes or that don’t fit, their teacher will notify us and we will provide them uniforms,” Young said. “We usually provide two tops and two bottoms.”

Young said Junior Auxiliary keeps school uniforms in storage in the basement of the Growth Alliance, and if they do not already have the size a child needs, they will go purchase the correct size uniforms.

“We have a stock pile of school uniforms, and if anyone is in need of a uniform they can contact us,” she said. “If we don’t have the right size we can go purchase what they need.”

Young said Junior Auxiliary accepts donations of school uniforms year round.

“Usually the biggest need for uniforms at the beginning of the school year and when the weather starts changing,” Stewart said.

Stewart said Junior Auxiliary usually was asked for size 6 through 8 boys and girls short sleeved shirts and shorts, but any new uniforms or monetary donations would be accepted.
