About 100 kids from First United Methodist Church's child care program donned their red, white and blue best to march down Commerce Street as part of their Independence Day Parade Thursday morning. The parade was just one of a number of Independence Day related activities last week.
These ladies were part of a rotating canasta party back in July of 1955. A review of several of the old Daily Times Leader papers from the 1950s shows that canasta was quite a popular pastime, especially with various ladies clubs.
Walmart staff and customers were evacuated from the building due to a ventilation issue which cased smoke to filter into the store Tuesday morning. According to West Point Fire Department officials, there were no injuries and the situation was resolved fairly quickly.

The West Point Board of Selectmen looks to consider a potential decrease in salary at a special budget hearing at 5:30 tonight at City Hall. West Point Mayor Robbie Robinson said the change in salary had been discussed in the past, and the board would discuss the matter at tonight's meeting.
Groups of girls ages 3 – 12 attended Cheer Camp June 22 - 26 at West Point High School. The girls learned basic cheers and dance steps in the hopes of being chosen as cheerleaders for Fifth Street Junior High and West Point High School Green Wave teams.
